Did You Know Your Electric Meter Talks Back To The Power Company?

Go look at the meter on the side of the house tonight. If it's a modern one, there's a small light blinking.

That blink is the meter reporting back to the power company what one house is pulling from the grid.

What it can't see is who else is pulling on the same lines.

Data centers used about 4.4% of all the electricity in America in 2023. The Department of Energy expects that to reach somewhere between 6.7% and 12% by 2028. And 78% of Americans told Consumer Reports they're concerned those buildings will push household bills up.

The richest man in the world has already filed his answer.

On January 30, 2026, SpaceX filed with the FCC for up to one million satellites — an “Orbital Data Center” system that runs on near-constant sunlight instead of the grid your meter is plugged into.

James Altucher built a free presentation around that filing — what's actually in it, and what he believes it sets in motion next.
